The Truth About Sullivan’s Island, SC

After our time in Columbia, SC we decided to head to Charleston, SC for the 4th of July weekend for a little rest and relaxation before heading to Charlotte, NC. Of course, we could not miss the opportunity to set up on July 4th at the annual Sullivan’s Island Golf Cart Parade and get a glimpse into the beach culture of South Carolina. In this parade, the community decorates golf carts to celebrate the Independence of America.

Ironically, Sullivan Island was the entry point for 40% of the 400,000 African slaves brought to British North America. It has been compared to Ellis Island and it is believed that nearly half of all African Americans have ancestors that passed through Sullivan’s Island.
This memorial commemorates this past and also the strength of African American to have endured the oppressive conditions of human bondage and degradation.
